The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 37,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 14 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Local Colliery Band

March 28, 2013 2 comments

Hi does anyone know if Ushaw Moor had a Colliery Band ?,  of course Bearpark and Esh Colliery band is well known and still going today.

Had an email from Gavin Holman http://www.ibew.co.uk

Dear Sir/Madam,

Did your village, town or community once have its own brass or silver band?

I am carrying out research in the history of brass bands in local communities, and would like to ask if you know of any information about any such extinct bands in your area.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries were the “golden age” for these bands numbering, it is said, up to 40,000 distinct bands at their peak. Many of these bands were associated with local industries, often being a “works” band. Others provided a musical focus for many small towns and villages in the days before the gramophone and the wireless. Today, in contrast, only some 1,500 or so are left active in the UK.

Sadly many of the bands left little in the way of information about their existence, and what does exist is widely scattered with individuals, local archives and national collections.

Part of my research is to identify these lost bands, to collect together material to provide a central database of information – containing a mixture of primary information as well as references to material held elsewhere (e.g. in local archives).

Any information you can provide would be gratefully received. Whether actual information or pictures of any bands, or pointers to resources, or sources for further investigation. Even knowing that a particular band existed is significant!

Currently much of the information I have collected is available online, as a freely available resource, at http://www.ibew.co.uk  – in various locations, for example, in the Reference section under “Extinct Bands” or “Vintage Pictures”.

With best wishes for your continuing research in local history,

Yours,

Gavin Holman

Ushaw Moor Needs your Memories

March 30, 2012 8 comments

Been a little quite March on the Ushaw Moor Memories BLOG.

The BLOG relies on YOU to submit your memories.

My last request seemed to have sparked off a few comments/memories, specifically regarding “Throwing Money At Weddings”, but the post had other posing questions, some of which were :

  • Is there a special SMELL that provokes a certain memory in your life ?
  • Which street did you grow up in ?
  • What do you remember about going to school ?
  • What was your favorite moment from school?
  • What was your first job ?
  • What were the special things that happened to you as you were growing up ?
  • What was family life like when you were growing up?
  • How did you celebrate holidays and special occasions?
  • What changes have you noticed during your life in such areas as fashion, morality and technology?

Take 10 minutes out of busy day and answer some of these question, we would love to hear about them.

Paul 🙂

I have a vivid memory of time I spent in this village, as a child I remember hardly ever being in the house, I was either up the woods, near ushaw college, or down the beck, “catchin minners”. Life seemed so much better then. Well those were the days, by the way,, great site….:) posted by ushaw @ 6:15 PM

I read the “Autobiography of Frank Proctor” some time ago and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I would recommend this book to any of the older generation in Ushaw Moor.

Frank was a very strong character who went as a very young man with a number of friends to work on the farms in Canada. He suffered homesickness as one by one his friends returned to the Ushaw Moor area and he was left alone in a strange country thousands of miles away from his home.  posted by ushaw @ 6:12 PM

I enjoyed reading about Martin and Ruby Gallagher. My Gran and Grandad lived at 28 Arthur St. and as a child I was often sent to the little shop. It was a happy place, Ruby was always singing. My Gran never called her Ruby Gallaher it was Ruby Deaton. Also in Arthur St. were Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. Jolly , Mrs. Nanncarrow and the Wallige family. They were friendly with the Young family who lived in Whitehouse Lane. posted by ushaw @ 6:11 PM
