Many people may have seen this photograph in a certain publication, this is an original image, I can put names to three of the miners. Third from the left my uncle Oliver Anderson next to him his brother Fred Anderson, sixth miner is my dad Alan Brown, not sure who the others are (possibly 1950’s)

Deerness Valley Memories 
I remember a couple of families called Anderson who lived in Ushaw Moor and who both moved away many years ago. One family lived at 46 Bracken Court, I was born in 1946 and there was a lad I only knew as ‘ Panda’ Anderson and his younger sister about my age called Heather or was it Hazel. They moved away in the 1950’s Then there were Andersons in Broom Crescent who emigrated to the United States. They were one of only a few families who had a car, a Sunbeam Mayflower. They had a daughter Carol who was in my class at school before she went to the DGGS at 11 years. I often wonder what happened after they left Ushaw Moor. Any updates would be appreciated.
Colin (Panda) Anderson and his sister Hazel are my cousins. Hazel and her husband Alan Ronson emigrated to Canada. Colin and his wife Glenda Howie moved to Nottingham with his parents. I remember Carol Anderson (no relation), they originated I believe from New Brancepeth, moved to Broom Crescent in the 50’s.
I remember Colin Anderson and Glenda Howie well. Glenda worked on the Brandon & New Brancepeth Co-op travelling shop with me for a few years.Glenda used to live in Brandon.Margaret it is a small world.
‘Panda’ Anderson – it seems nearly all the lads had a nickname in those days, here are a few I remember while growing up in the 50s. ‘Baker’ Greenwell – ‘Rip’ Kirby – ‘Dolly Pinkney – ‘ Cocker’ Robson – ‘Lela’ Pearson – ‘Soccer’ Glaghorn – ‘China’ Waugh – ‘Ginger’ Patterson – ‘Titchy’ Thompson – ‘Cuggy’ Coulthard – ‘Whitey’ John Vasey – ‘Hoss’ Brown ‘Tucker’ Thompson? etc etc.
Titchy Thompson were my Granddad please if you have any story’s my dad would love to hear them 🙂
My dads name was Greenwell, so i would be interested to know who “baker” Greenwell was
Hi Enid , I think the baker Greenwell referred to above is my dad billy Greenwell, and whitey John vasey is his cousin.
My grandad tom Greenwell was also known as baker
baker Greenwell was known to me as Mr Greenwell married to Sadie and father to Joan and Billy. Joan married Jack O’Connor and Billy moved down South. I think he joined the police force.
My mother’s cousin was know as ‘Tucker’ (Tommy) Harrison, his dad Sam had an allotment on Bannerman Terrace. Tucker joined the navy and I believe eventually went to live in Scotland where he passed away years ago. Does any one know what ‘Lela’ Pearson’s proper name was please? I’m wondering if he was a relative of mine.
Leslie Pearson, I know he had an older brother and I think they lived in Victoria Court. Denise I am sure you have jogged my memory with ‘Tucker’ Harrison – I did put a question mark beside the surname.
Leslie Pearson is my late dad’s cousin, he is the youngest of four brothers Tom, Raymond and Albert. He now lives at High Brandon. They did live at Victoria Court and in the 50’s moved to number 1 Holly Park. Ray and Albert are still in Ushaw Moor. Tucker Harrison would have been in his eighties now, he had one sister I think she was called Sheila. He was also cousin to John Harrison who was landlord of the Flass Inn in the 1960’s.
I am thinking Leslie’s brother was called Albert – both really nice lads and tough as teak.
They are nice people. Their dad died young so they didn’t have it easy with just my great auntie Meg to raise them.
Tucker Harrison is therefore older than the lad I was thinking of. Suddenly the name Tucker Whitfield springs to mind – sure I am right this time.
My dad worked at ushaw pit in the timber yard and lamp cabin his nick name was mylie Anderson from ladysmith then bannerman used to teach the violin.
I walked past your home in Bannerman Terrace very regular and heard the violin being played in the sixties.
Hello Enid & Allison, yes the ‘Baker’ Greenwell I knew lived at No 60 Whitehouse Court and I suspect he was born about 1944. Do think he was called Billy, I know he was a canny fooballer – may also have been related to the footballer Jackie O’Conner 7? Whitehouse Court. Seems as if his father was also called ‘Baker’.
My dads name was William (Billy) Greenwell, but he was born in Bear park and we lived in Ushaw Tce. I wonder if they were related
Hazel and Carole Anderson, two bonny lasses who who both emigrated to North America at a very young age. Did they ever return? It would appear Hazel is still living in Canada as we have input from a relative, but what about Carol? ? ? Did she ever return?

Hi Jimmy, lovely to hear from you, I remember you. Your dad used to live with us when we lived in Maple Park in Ushaw Moor. Always wondered what had happened to you! I still live in Ushaw Moor.
