My connection with Ushaw Moor is I am a cousin of Valerie Snaith, my maternal grandfather was John Bell of Cockhouse farm, my paternal grandfather was steward of "Cub House" in Ushaw Moor. I lived in New Brancepeth until 1955 when along with Mum & Dad & brother Duncan emigrated to Australia. I have been back to England a couple of times and am again coming in June 2010. I certainly enjoy visiting Ushaw Moor cricket club where my fathers photo is still on the wall. would enjoy meeting you during my visit.
Kind regards
AdrianRoss

James Turner was born at Rochdale, Lancs. His daughter, Margaret married John William Holliday, my great grandparents. There is a family rumour that Edward (know as Ede) was lost at sea whilst serving with the Merchant Marine.

Hello, my great grandma was Margaret Holliday nee Turner. My Grandmother was Eliza Harrison nee Holliday. My Great Uncle was Alfred Bates Holliday. If I remember correctly, Eliza Bates married James Turner. There are lots of relations through the Turner/Holliday line. Alf, who left the above message, is my mother's cousin.
Mr Cartwright - records of the Ushaw Moor war memorial are at www.newmp.org.uk
Alternatively just type in the general search box - North East War Memorial Project - and up the site comes. Simply scroll into Ushaw Moor.

I have had a look for you and did spot two Turner's as follows:
Pte M Turner CGM. You will very probably be aware that those initials stand for Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. A Pte A Turner is the second one.

Just check that those found are for WW1 rather than WW2.

I'm on the hunt for some of those Cochranes! I'm wondering if you or your correspondent Jeny Cochrane (or anyone else for that matter) can direct me toward William Percy Cochrane b. 1860ish. He married Helen Lavinia Shaw of Bath, whom I am researching.

What I have so far is wonderful, but there is so much more - Rhodesian gold, Sth African diamonds, spying for the Admiralty, military hospitals, benevolence on a huge scale.

I am sure West Stanley had a team that played in the Greyhound Stadium in East Stanley. Sadly this no longer there. I can recollect Ushaw Moor playing there many moons ago.
